REALLY, KANYE?

I know folks have been blogging all day, so I'll jump on the "WEST needs to rest" bandwagon too....
I mean REALLY, Kanye? Was the outburst on the VMAs necessary? It seems B wasn't trippin'...why were you?
I am starting to think it was all staged -- as is most of the shit we see on mainstream media...WEST''s outb… Continue

Forum: Surviving the Economy

Urban Warriors, have you heard the news?!
The jobless rate has reached record heights. Unemployment is approaching 10 percent and, despite optimistic talk from economy experts in other areas, the job market is expected to be the last sector to reflect an upturn. So, to the 1 in 10 Urban Warriors out there today actively searching for work, tell us about your journey.

This number, of course, represents only the tip of the iceberg. It only hints at the underemployed, those citizens searching for… Continue

Gender Questions and Championship Runner

More than anything else, this fussy debate, too ridiculous to bring out the big guns on either side of the culture wars, finally exposes, naked and undeniably, the flimsiness of our outmoded gender categories and the truly changing nature of femininity and masculinity.
It's now m… Continue

RE: Remembering the King, Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson has died. We, of course, heard the news in the dusk of Thursday night; in time for quick programming changes before the dawn of primetime. We watched the inital media response and called our loved ones in disbelief.

In fact, the truth of Michael's passing didn't hit me until this morning away from Katie Couric and the paparazzi stationed outside of the hospital. Finally, in the words of Dick Clark and the radio DJ's charged with bringing the sad news to those that missed last ni… Continue

Remembering The KING - Michael Jackson

When I was in born, my mom and dad filled the house all the time with music of all kinds. At 2-3 years old, I remember hearing rock, jazz, soul, blues, r&B, lots of motown...my dad played the congos alot with his boyz or he was jamming to some Santana, EWF or Weather Report. My… Continue

Body Language

I see you across the room,
Your eyes are fixed right on me.
They start at my head,
And go down to my red, high-heeled shoes.
I try to concentrate on something else,
But my eyes continue to return back to you.
I become uncomfortable, uneasy,
As you begin to approach me.
You ask me for a dance, I hesitate,
Then I slowly enter into your embrace.
Bodies attracting like a magnet,
Sticking together like glue.
Your body speaks fluently, mine…
Listens.

Grammy Night in the Urban Warrior Den

What’s up with the “Backfro?!”
Jay and Kanye, the leaders of the New Rat Pack showed out on the Grammy stage in black tuxedos and bow ties for a first time, whole crew performance of “Swagger” (including a very bold, pregnant, and polka-dotted M.I.A).

The song was still as hot as it ever was. The guys were too smooth and yet, as we were enjoying the boastfulness of the whole scene, of Wayne and Jay and Kanye in silk and patent leather, our faces couldn’t help but scrunch at the hair.

I get it.… Continue

Fall and Wish for Flying

Four by six platform
One hundred feet above the ground and
pierced through by a ladder of one hundred rungs
Reaching from the earth, Reaching for the heavens
One hundred feet above the soil and surrounded by
blue skies in three hundred and sixty degrees.

Wish for wings
and no fears in winds blowing for the horizon.
Know living and know of plummeting
faster than
knowing for the ground.
Love that girl, she insisted from her pit in the papasan chair.
Jump! she yelled with… Continue

Praise Song for the Day. Inaugural Poem from Elizabeth Alexander

Each day we go about our business, walking past each other, catching each others’ eyes or not, about to speak or speaking. All about us is noise. All about us is noise and bramble, thorn and din, each one of our ancestors on our tongues. Someone is stitching up a hem, darning a hole in a uniform, patching a tire, repairing the things in need of repair.

Someone is trying to make music somewhere with a pair of wooden spoons on an oil drum with cello, boom box, harmonica, voice.

A woman and her s… Continue

Writing a History of the Present

Rendered in quick cuts, high art and the ascetics of pop culture and music television, our modern interpretation of history is digital, with bound books full of the written word coming to look like a dusty relic of another time.
Talk about the 60’s, or the 70’s, or the 50s and one’s mind goes directly to images of Jimi Hendrix in a headband, a magnificent disco ball hanging in Studio 54, or ankle socks and Mary Jane’s (respectively). While the details of the images may differ depending on where… Continue

Inauguration Day Approaches: What will January 20th mean to you?

In one week, Barack Obama will be sworn in as our new Commander-in-Chief.

Urban Warriors, I won’t be in DC. Times are tight. I’ve got bills to pay here in the Triangle and so I won’t be a live witness to one of the most historic events of modern history. Just the same, I’ll be someplace thick with a group of citizens, in tears, under the brilliant shine of a brighter future for all of our communities.

When they ask you, “Why do you cry?” what will you say? What will be in your heart as Barack… Continue
